Why your conservatory gets condensation – and how to stop it

If you’ve noticed your conservatory windows misting up every morning, you’re far from alone. Conservatory condensation happens when warm, moist air inside your home meets the cold glass and roof panels of your conservatory, turning into water droplets that collect on the glass and window sill.
It’s one of the most common issues we come across at Snug Conservatory Solutions, and the good news is it’s usually straightforward to put right once you understand what’s causing it. Here’s why it happens and how to stop it for good.
What causes conservatory condensation
Condensation happens when warm, moist air meets a cold surface and turns to water. A conservatory often brings a few of these factors together at once:
- Warm air meets cold glass. The moment moist air touches a cold surface, it condenses into the water droplets you see on the pane.
- Single glazing and ageing frames sit at a colder surface temperature than modern glazing, so they mist up more easily.
- An old, uninsulated roof. Many conservatories still have their original thin, plastic-style roof panels (known as polycarbonate), which offer very little insulation and let heat escape, closely linked to the heat loss many older conservatories suffer from too.
- Everyday moisture from cooking, showering, drying washing indoors and a few houseplants all adds to the humidity in the air.
- Poor ventilation lets humidity levels climb, so moist air has nowhere to go except towards the coldest surfaces it can find.
- Big temperature swings. Colder nights and milder days during the colder months widen the gap between indoor and outdoor temperatures.
Is a little condensation always a serious problem?
Occasional light condensation on a cold morning is normal and rarely serious. Persistent condensation that lingers on window sills or spreads to frames is different. Left untreated, it encourages troublesome mould and can cause pretty serious issues for your conservatory’s structure over time.
The English Housing Survey has found that serious condensation now affects a growing number of UK homes, so it’s worth taking seriously rather than living with it.

Spotting the early signs of a condensation problem
A condensation problem rarely appears overnight. In our experience, it tends to show up gradually, starting along the bottom edge of the glass before spreading further. Watch out for:
- Misted glass first thing in the morning
- Damp or swollen window frames
- Standing water on the window sill
- Mould developing around the edges of the glass
- A persistent musty smell
How to reduce the risk of conservatory condensation
Once you know what’s driving it, tackling conservatory condensation comes down to better ventilation day to day, and better insulation if it keeps coming back despite that:
| Fix | What it does |
| Trickle vents and roof vents | Keep air moving without leaving windows wide open |
| Opening windows for a few minutes each day | Lets humid air escape, even in winter months |
| Using a cooker hood whilst cooking | Removes moisture at the source |
| Thermal blinds and condensation catchers | Manage moisture and heat loss day to day |
| A portable heater or compressor dehumidifier | Lowers humidity for a while, but isn’t a lasting fix |
| An insulation upgrade or full warm roof replacement | Raises the temperature of the surfaces inside your conservatory so warm air is far less likely to meet a cold spot |
Good ventilation plays a big role in moisture control day to day. An ageing conservatory with a cold roof will still keep producing the same result each season though, however well you ventilate it, because the surfaces themselves stay cold.
When it’s time to upgrade or replace your conservatory
If you’ve tried better ventilation and the short-term fixes above, but condensation keeps coming back, the roof or the glazing is usually the real cause, whether that means an insulation upgrade or a full warm roof replacement. Every conservatory and roof replacement from Snug Conservatory Solutions comes with double glazing as standard and is built to last, so that common problem is removed for good rather than just managed.
